Alper Aydın situates his sculpture “Unwanted Guest” in the garden of the Seminary, using as his material the ghost nets that cause grave harm to the living populations and coral reefs of the deep seas of the Prince Islands region just as they do all over the world, hunting passively on the seafloor because they are dumped in the sea when they snag on rocks during fishing. Expressing throughout his body of work the belief that humans are no different from a fish in the sea or a bird in the sky, Aydın fashions these nets collected from the seafloor into a massive wave threatening to swallow everyone, channeling into the exhibition space the experience of a school of fish in the sea. The ghost nets that wreak considerable havoc on the ecosystem until they are appeased and removed through exacting means take the form of a giant wave opposite the main entrance of the Halki Seminary.
